Kaya Scodelario DID Audition for Katniss in The Hunger Games

Kaya Scodelario was a fan favorite for the role of Katniss from the beginning of The Hunger Games casting process, so many fans were upset when we were continually told by her reps that she wasn't in the running for the role.

Our last conversation with her team was in response to an EW article where Lionsgate named Kaya as one of "approximately 30 actresses [who] have either met or read for the role." At that time, her reps told us that, contrary to the article, Kaya had "not met for the role nor submitted a reading for the role of Katniss." That was our last communication with Kaya's reps since two weeks later Jennifer Lawrence was officially cast.

But a few days ago one of our readers, Mel, let us know that Kaya had tweeted that she had in fact auditioned for the role.

Given that, we reached back out to her reps today for confirmation. Here was there response:
After our last conversation Kaya did put herself on tape for the role of Katniss which was at the request of the producers. Sadly the role went elsewhere but Kaya very much enjoyed being part of the casting process and wishes the film all the success it deserves.
Since Kaya was a fan favorite, we're glad to see that she had a shot at the role. Although it seems the request from the movie producers came in at the last second, since rumors had already started by then suggesting Jennifer was the clear frontrunner for the role.

  1. Kaya was my pick from the start so I'm glad to hear she did actually audition for it. At least now we know that she didn't get the role because Jennifer was better than her, rather than her not getting the chance to.

  2. Kaya was also the first person I thought of when I didn't even know they were making the books into films. Her Effy was just so strong yet vulnerable, it was easy to jump to Kaya for Katniss. I'm glad they gave her a chance, but I'm quite satisfied with their choice in Jennifer Lawrence.

  3. I'm a big Kaya fan and I was wondering whether she actually did audition for Katniss.
Although Jennifer seemed to be the clear frontrunner, the last second request for that audition makes it seem like the producers were still considering other options, just to be sure.

  4. ...And she STILL didn't get the part? Kaya would have been amazing. :/

  5. This should make us feel even better about Jen and Lionsgate/Gary Ross. They DID listen to us and chose to reach out to Kaya. It would have been easy for them to require a live audition in LA, so the fact that they were willing to let her send in a tape seems to me like they were really willing to give the fans' pick a chance. Since Jen got it over her, I think we can expect some great things from our future Katniss. Same with Josh - Hunter auditioned as well, and Josh beat him out fair and square. As much as I loved Kaya & Hunter as the Hunger Games Dream Team, I think we can rest easy that they were given a shot but the best people were chosen.

  6. Lila, that may or may not be the case. When people are very set on their original picks you don't know what kind of chance anyone else really had. It could have been Lionsgate doing some PR that were responsible for Kaya and Hunter's audtions which were both very last minute compared to the picks of Gary Ross. We don't know if the fan favorites actually had a real shot or if Lionsgate just wanted to make it look that way.

But despite that I still think the movie will be good. I am just tired of everyone assuming that Jennifer and Josh blew the competition out of the water. From what has been reported that may have been the case with Jennifer but as for anyone else who knows!

  7. I never really got the hype for Kaya as Katniss, so I'm really happy Jennifer got it :)She just doesn't fit my mental image of Katniss and I'm not familiar with her acting, so I'm not bummed about her not getting the role.

    Don't shoot me :P

  8. I never got the whole Kaya for Katniss hype either. I'm glad the part went to Jennifer and I really can't wait to see how she plays the role.

  9. that was sad i wanted her closer 2 the end!!!! (my fav out of the last 3 was Haileee Stienfeld) to be honest i type cast which means i like 2 match characters on appearance and acting ability. i felt that no one in hollywood looked like katniss- and honestly Hailee was closest appearance wise- but the filmmakers decided to go by acting ability only- i was looking at easier to not use so much makeup thing. i really wanted lucas till as peeta and am still wondering why he didn't get the role!!! (honestly if hailee was cast- then they wouldn't have used Lucas as peeta- we all know that but Josh may have been a good gale in that world but they went older...) (we can't be thinking on what could have been...) but anyway, kaya was my first choice in the middle for katniss. she was the one i thought looked the most like the character- i've never seen her act and in my own world despite not looking like the american version of katniss ( i look like the scandinavian version) i would have tried out if i was an actress as would many of the fans!!!
but in the start i wasn't sure on who should play katniss and jennifer lawrence was unknown enough- but since she became katniss all thease sites have put up every thing she's done- so now i'm starting to get at she's not as unknown as it seems and is trying 2 get a lot of attention by getting into major franchises. i got used to her- but i still am not 2 fond of her in the role... but u can't judge until i see the movie.

  10. Honestly, I really wanted Kaya to be Katniss.

    This is oddly depressing/comforting.
