Script
  • 9/21/2010 - The Hunger Games trilogy author Suzanne Collins submitted two draft screenplays to Lionsgate, which then went through rewrites from veteran screenwriter Billy Ray.
  • 2/24/2011 - According to a Wall Street Journal article, the script is secret and hasn't been finalized.
    • 3/19/2011 - Danielle Chuchran confirmed this in our interview about the Katniss audition process.
  • 5/4/2011 - On the script writing process, Suzanne Collins told USA Today, "I wrote the treatment and original screenplay. Then screenwriter Billy Ray did a pass (or rewrite). Then director Gary Ross did a pass, then Gary and I did a pass together."
  • 5/27/2011 - Lionsgate tweeted that "The current draft of The Hunger Games script was not written by Billy Ray. It is a collaboration between Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins."

  • 9/7/2010 - Deadline reported that there were 6 directors being considered by Lionsgate: Gary Ross, Sam Mendes, David Slade, Andrew Adamson, Rupert Sanders and Susanna White. 
  • 11/30/2010 - David Slade confirmed that he was considered to direct.
  • 12/17/2010 - Gary Ross was officially announced as director via an Entertainment Weekly article, although he was suspected to be the director after attending the American Film Market to promote The Hunger Games in November.

  • 1/24/2011 - Lionsgate confirmed they hired Debra Zane as the casting director for the movie. Lionsgate also said that no auditions have been held yet.

    • 9/2/2010 - USA Today reported that Kick-Ass star Chloe Moretz is the front runner for the role of Katniss.
    • 10/11/2010 - Lyndsy Fonseca confirmed that she has a copy of the film script (as of 12/9/2010, Lyndsy still confirmed she has the script but that there is nothing to report on her possible audition for Katniss).
    • 10/12/2010 - Kaya Scodelario originally tweeted that she had the script before her publicist said that was not true.
    • 12/17/2010 - Director Gary Ross said he hadn't met with any actresses to play Katniss, but that conversations would begin soon.
      • 12/20/2010 - Producer Nina Jacobson confirmed Gary's comments, saying that casting for Katniss will begin in early 2011.
    • 12/20/2010 - Hailee Steinfeld met with Producer Nina Jacobson previously, according to a LA Times article, but it's not clear what the meeting was about.
    • 1/26/2011 - Malese Jow tweeted "Yes!!! Let the games begin... ;)" before taking it down, prompting many to speculate that she may have an audition for movie.
    • 2/25/2011 - Debra Zane said that around 50 actresses have auditioned for the role of Katniss and the casting process continues.
    • 2/25/2011 - Debra Zane's team provided this description of Katniss She should be Caucasian, between ages 15 and 20, who could portray someone "underfed but strong," and "naturally pretty underneath her tomboyishness."
    • 3/2/2011 - According to Variety, Jennifer Lawrence is a front runner, and Jennifer's mom may have provided a clue in an interview with etalk.
    • 3/2/2011 - According to Variety, Abigail Breslin is listed as one of the top actresses vying for the role.
    • 3/3/2011 - Lionsgate told Entertainment Weekly that 30 actresses have met or read for the role of Katniss, including Jennifer Lawrence, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Chloë Moretz, Lyndsy Fonseca, Emma Roberts, Saoirse Ronan, Kaya Scodelario, Emily Browning and Shailene Woodley
      • 3/3/2011 - We spoke with Kaya's reps who told us she "has not met for the role nor submitted a reading for the role of Katniss."
    • 3/10/2011 - According to MTV Hollywoodcrush, a source at Lionsgate said no offers have been made for the part of Katniss, in response to a reliable source who told us that Jennifer Lawrence had been offered the role.
    • 3/11/2011 - According to reports from Variety and Deadline, Jennifer Lawrence is close to receiving an offer for Katniss.

    • 2/7/2011 - Alex Pettyfer told J-14 Magazine that he met with Lionsgate about The Hunger Games
      • 2/25/2011 - He confirmed to Access Hollywood that he met with Alli Shearmur, one of the film's co-producer, about the role of Peeta. He says he is undecided at the moment and is waiting to see the script.
    • 3/13/2011 - Josh Hutcherson told Entertainment Weekly that he's read the script and had meetings with Gary Ross.
    • 3/16/2011 - Hunter Parrish told E! Online that he's met with Hunger Games producers but hasn't yet seen the script.

Filming/Release Date
  • 5/28/2010 - MTV spoke to producers from Lionsgate at a Scholastic event for the trilogy, who said that the film will be going into production in January to release in later 2011. 
  • 9/15/2010 - It looks like we could now be seeing a 2012 release, while IMDB lists 2013.
  • 11/27/2010 - Acting-Auditions.org reported that filming would take place in North Carolina and Georgia starting in April 2011.
  • 12/17/2010 - According to an Entertainment Weekly article, production will begin in late spring 2011.
  • 1/6/2011 - An Entertainment Weekly article said that Gary Ross hopes to have The Hunger Games in theaters in 2012.
  • 1/25/2011 - Lionsgate announced to Entertainment Weekly that The Hunger Games will be released March 23, 2012.
  • 2/3/2011 - This NC filming rumor reappeared on Backstage.com. The NC Film Office reiterated to us that they're "still are not working on any projects by that name" and Lionsgate said they "have not yet confirmed the location information" for the movie.
  • 3/24/2011 - According to an Entertainment Weekly article, "production is slated to begin toward the end of May in North Carolina."
  • 3/31/3011 - PROnetworks Larry Richman and Production Week both listed the filming dates as May 23 - August 3 in Wilmington, NC.
  • 3/31/2011 - The Hob discovered a crew call for Artemis (the working title for The Hunger Games) on the Charlotte Regional Partnership website, suggesting potential filming in the Charlotte, NC, area.
  • 4/5/2011 - An insider source told The Hob that filming is scheduled to take place in Asheville, Shelby and Charlotte, NC.
  • 5/9/2011 - The Hunger Games is filming in Hildebran, NC, May 19-26, according to the Hickory Daily Record.
  • 5/20/2011 - The Hunger Games is filming in Shelby, NC, May 26-June 3, according to The Shelby Star and News Anchor Russ Bowen.
  • 5/24/2011 - The Hunger Games is filming in N. Fork Reservoir in Black Mountain, NC, June 20-30, according to News Anchor Russ Bowen.
  • 5/31/2011 - A casting call was announced for "unusual and/or unique looks" for extras who can work in August, which will likely be filming scenes for the Capitol.
  • 6/1/2011 - The Hunger Games is expected to film in DuPont State Forest in early June, according to a posting about trail closures.
  • 6/13/2011 - Lionsgate confirmed that The Hunger Games will be released in the UK on March 23, 2012, and in Spain on April 20, 2012.
  • 7/1/2011 - Filming will take place in Charlotte and Concord, NC, in August for the Capitol scenes, according to an email sent to extras.

  • 8/28/2010 - The Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson told The Daily Beast that she and Lionsgate agree that the film should be rated PG-13 so as not to alienate the book’s 12- to 18-year-old core audience.
  • 1/6/2011 - Gary Ross reiterated this PG-13 rating in an Entertainment Weekly interview.
